Smartcards over remote USB connections do not work

Error

When using smart card readers that are controlled via a network USB port, either the smart card or the token is not displayed on the smart card itself.

Status

This error occurs whenever the connection is made in an RDP session.

Solution

The smart card connection via a network-based USB connection should be established via Hyper-V Manager or VMWare Manager in a direct connection to the VM.
